Case Study: ULS Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro
TECHNOLOGY THAT SUPPORTS CARE
Challenges
In a critical hospital environment, where operations can never stop and the margin for error is minimal, ULSTMAD (Unidade Local de Saúde de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro) was beginning to face serious technological limitations.
With a mission to serve approximately 370,000 people and 4,900 healthcare professionals in 3 hospitals and 23 health centers, the existing infrastructure needed to be upgraded and redesigned to reduce maintenance and operating costs, ensure greater security, greater visibility, and automated access control.
The growth in operational complexity, together with legal and regulatory requirements (GDPR and NIS2), made it urgent to strengthen security, automate processes, and ensure centralized management without compromising the care provided.
Solution
To respond to these challenges, Warpcom designed and implemented a phased plan, thought out in detail and in close collaboration with ULSTMAD’s technical and clinical teams. The strategy was based on three fundamental pillars: visibility, control, and security.

Complete inventory and categorization of devices with the Claroty xDome solution.

Implementation of dynamic authentication and access control policies with Cisco ISE, eliminating manual workflows.

Enhanced security through event correlation and continuous monitoring with firewall and SIEM solutions, ensuring proactive detection, immediate incident response, and strengthened compliance.
The result was a modern, automated, and scalable hospital network, fully aligned with clinical rhythms.
Results
The technological transformation enabled ULSTMAD to:

Gain full visibility over all connected devices.

Implement 100% automated authentication and segmentation processes.

Monitor more than 80,000 devices and 16,000 clinical equipment units in real time.

Analyze more than 120 GB of logs per day, with event correlation.

Free technical teams from repetitive tasks, reducing risks and increasing efficiency.

Lower the operating and maintenance costs of its network and infrastructure.
On a day-to-day basis, these improvements translate into more clinical time available, greater safety, and uninterrupted continuity of patient care. And in the end, the real transformation is not about technology, but about when a patient is treated and everything around works seamlessly, almost without being noticed.
